Data Interpretation Line Graphs

The Line graph is a pictorial representation of data and helps determine trends and rates of change. The slope of the graph helps in computing the magnitude of change between two consecutive points. This graph is similar to the bar graph except for the fact that here data is in nature of the flow mode, and not discrete. The line graph indicates changes in plotted variables with respect to the two indices calibrated on the X and the Y axes respectively. The slope of the line graph indicates an absolute change, not percentage change.

1. What was the respective ratio between the number of girls enrolled in the school – C in the year 2007 and the total number of girls enrolled in school-A and school-B together in the same year?
Ans: 4 : 11
Explanation: Required ratio = 20 : (25 + 30) = 20 : 55 = 4 : 11

2. In which school was the difference between the number of girls enrolled in the year 2008 and 2004 minimum?
Ans: Both school-A and School-C
Explanation: School A (30 – 20) thousand = 10 thousand
School B ( 25 – 15) thousand = 10 thousand
School C (27.5 – 10) thousand = 17.5 thousand

3. What was the approximate average number of girls enrolled in the year 2006 in all the three schools together?
Ans: 20,800
Explanation: Required Average = ( [27.5+20+15]/3) thousand =20800

4. Total number of girls enrolled in all the three schools in the year 2004 was what percentage of the number of girls enrolled in school-C in the year 2007?
(1) 220     (2) 210          (3) 45         (4) 145        (5) None of these
Ans: 5(None of these)
Explanation: Total number of girls admitted in 2004
 = (20 + 15 + 10) thousand
 = 45 thousand
Required percentage = ( 45/20)× 100 = 225

5. In which year was the total number of girls enrolled in all the three schools together second highest?
Ans: 2007
Explanation: Total number of girls :
Year 2005 (25 + 22.5 + 15) thousand = 16.5 thousand
Year 2006 (27.5 + 20 + 15) thousand = 62.5 thousand
Year 2007 (30 + 25 + 20) thousand = 70 thousand
